Amazing Race Bangkok
I don’t know if you have ever seen the show, Amazing Race, but on the reality show players compete against one another in a race over several days and several continents. Well, we didn’t leave Thailand, but we did decide to get to our destination the creative way. Before we left the hotel, we all agreed that the route and means to get to our destination was part of the fun. We all agreed that no one would complain no matter what. Everyone understood, and everyone accepted the challenge.
We needed to get back to the place where we bought our furniture so we could pay the balance and get our items to the shipping company. The easy way…was to give the address to the Taxi driver and ride. The creative way was like this….
Armed with 3 maps, we walked from our hotel about ½ mile to the closest sky train station (Sursak). We rode the sky train to the end of the Silom line to the Saphan Taksin station. This cost us each only 10 baht. We walked to a pier on the Chao Praya River. On the map, the river was blue, but we almost didn’t recognize it because it looked more like thousands of flowing gallons of “Yoo-hoo”. If you don’t know what a yoo-hoo is, its like chocolate water you can buy at a 7 Eleven. Oh, by the way, there is a 7 Eleven on every corner. Anyway, we got on a long narrow boat and headed north up the river. The lady on the boat wouldn’t take my money, so the boat ride was free. We got off the boat at the Ratchawong Pier. As we stepped off the pier onto the main road, there were about 6 tuk-tuks their waiting. It was as if they knew we were coming. We gave our map and the address of the shop to about 3 different drivers before we got a head nod that he knew where to go. He said, “50 baht” and we all jumped in and took off. He took us within a block of our destination. I am sure we traveled several miles. Our journey was so smooth, there were no reasons for any complaints.
We asked the lady at the furniture store for a restaurant and she pointed us a couple of blocks away and around the corner. We enjoyed a good Thai lunch and then caught another tuk-tuk. We rode for about 20 minutes and paid another 150 baht. He dropped us at Siam Station. This is where we blindly found an amazing place to shop and eat. We all enjoyed a favorite drink from Starbucks and walked around Siam Center and Discovery Center for the afternoon. I have been fighting a cold for several days, and it was here where I just completely ran out of steam. We hopped on the sky train at Siam Station and took it all the way back to Sursak Station. We walked back to the hotel. I went to the room for a nap and Angie and kids went for a swim. After the nap and swim, we jumped back on the sky train and headed to Pizza Hut for dinner. On our way home we stopped by Dunkin Donuts for dessert.
We are back at our hotel and getting ready for bed. We are really ready to get back home, but cant leave here until we get the email with our visa information. I know it is coming as I have been in contact with my friends, we just have to be patient. We will leave here on Tuesday night and get home early Wednesday morning. We don’t have any plans for tomorrow, so check back later and maybe we can give you a good report.
PS – I told Angie that I wanted a GPS watch for my birthday. So we are on the lookout for one here before we go home. If anyone wants a challenge to do an internet search for a store in Bangkok, I would be truly grateful. I cant seem to find one. Be the first to post a comment with a location, and I will see if I can find it.
